EDTA Tubes

EDTA tubes are used to obtain whole blood or EDTA plasma samples. The plastic tubes are identified by a lavender cap. Generally, K2 or K3 Potassium Salt of EDTA (Ethylene Diamine Tetra Acetic acid) is used as an anticoagulant. There are no functional differences between the two additives. The physical difference between the additives is:

  • K3EDTA is a liquid solution in the Vacutainer Tubes.
  • K2EDTA is a liquid solution that is spray coated onto the interior surface of the Vacutainer Tube single-use, evacuated, sterile blood collection tube
  • Contains K2EDTA or K3EDTA
  • Used to obtain whole blood or EDTA plasma samples
